Englishmen purchased land located in Hempstead in 1643, which included land purchased by the Dutch back in 1639. A Dutch director then granted a patent to the English for Hempstead in 1644. The settlement of Oyster Bay received a charter in 1667 from the newer English colony of New York – then becoming Oyster Bay Township. By the time 1687 came around, the last parcel of land was sold by the Native Americans.
