Candles can bring beauty and scent to your home. Homes can also be damaged by fire if candles are not kept in a safe place.

After leaving a candle in the room and blowing a piece of paper into it, a homeowner required assistance to put out the fire. Although firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, smoke damage was extensive.

Take Charred Items Out

The candle's contents were too damaged to be cleaned in the room, so they had to be removed. Without homeowner consent or an adjuster, the techs won't dispose of any items found in the room. This allows property owners to know the status of restoration work and ensures SERVPRO® is covered by their insurance.

Test Before You Clean

It is important to test any smoke residues in a room before you attempt to clean them. The amount of smoke residue will depend on the temperature of the fire and the items burned. So, both dry smoke and moist smoke may be present in the same room.

Techs use dry cleaning sponges to remove dried smoke from walls and other painted surfaces. To remove wet smoke from walls and other painted surfaces, solvents are required.

Bedroom Odor Control

It is essential to get rid of charred materials. This will reduce the stench of fire. When a fire is started, hot air expands and pushes the odorous smoke out of porous materials. Thermal fogging is one way to get rid of the odors.

Duct Inspection

The fire was contained to the bedroom, but the family used the HVAC. High potential for soot to get through the conduit work was there. SERVPRO® technicians cleaned the ducts to eliminate any lingering odors.

SERVPRO® returns properties that have been damaged by fire back to their original condition.

SERVPRO® can help restore your interior to its normal state and remove any reminders that a fire occurred. We can dispatch a team to your home to provide emergency fire restoration services by simply calling.

What can you do to ensure that all odors and soot are gone?

We deal with soot and smoke when dealing with fire damage. Acidic soot residue can cause metals and other materials to corrode.

There are many ways to deal with soot residue, including:

  • Use dry or wet cleaning techniques to remove soot and smoke particles from different surfaces.

  • Thermal fogging technology heats the deodorant agents to release a chemical cloud that penetrates materials to remove tough odors.

  • Our skilled technicians can seal the walls with a special primer and then apply the final paint color to areas where smoke residue may be present.

Is my home's air safe?

To improve the air quality of your home, we use a variety of filtration tools to remove particles from the air. This will ensure that your home is free of smoke smells and safe from any lingering smoke after the fire.

  • Air scrubbers are powerful tools that reduce particulates in the environment and cut down on microorganism colonization.
  • Hydroxyl Generators can be used to deodorize your home and purify the air using HEPA filters.

Agitation Techniques for Glen Cove Fire Damage Restoration

Some of SERVPRO’s many strategies for fire damage restoration in Glen Cove

When we conduct House Fire Clean Up operations, we often encounter materials with deeply embedded fire residues. Rather than simply covering and concealing these damages, we work hard to remove them entirely through special care methods.

When we begin a fire damage restoration project in Glen Cove, one of the first things we do is analyze the situation and determine what types of materials have been affected. Porous materials such as wood and carpet are more challenging to remove fire residues than hard surfaces. These materials tend to pose the most problems with:

  • Smoke Damage
  • Fire and smoke damage in the kitchen
  • Expensive and delicate fabrics such as upholstery

Thankfully, SERVPRO technicians have several ways of removing residues from these materials. Many surfaces and objects receive treatment from agitation techniques that use motion and vibration to shake off ash and smoke. Structural materials may experience water and air pressure treatments, rotating brushes, or even sand-blasting treatments. Smaller objects and delicate materials may be treated with advanced techniques such as ultrasonic baths. These baths send ultrasonic waves through a cleaning solution to remove even the faintest traces of smoke in your belongings. With these and many other agitation-based cleaning methods, SERVPRO makes your home look “Like it never even happened.”

Local homeowners have trusted SERVPRO of Oyster Bay for years with challenging and time-sensitive damage restoration projects. Call us 24/7 at (516) 464-3300 for our emergency services.

How Does SERVPRO Address Soot Fire Damage in Oyster Bay?

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

Soot and smoke damage Fire and smoke remediation is no easy task. SERVPRO has the manpower and equipment for the job.

Post-fire recovery involves many aspects of cleaning and restoration.

After fire damage, Oyster Bay homes can struggle with multiple threatening effects. Soot can often be one of the most challenging obstacles for restoration professionals due to potential health hazards and the consequences of these carcinogenic particles on exposed surfaces and contents. We have a comprehensive approach to fire damage restoration, including:

  • Fire and smoke damage
  • Fire damage restoration
  • Smoke remediation
  • Fire damaged homes

Can SERVPRO Filter Airborne Fire and Smoke Damage?

Airborne particulates can be an underrated threat of smoke damage in area homes after fire damage. As challenging as ash and smoke residues can be in fire-damaged homes, smoke remediation of these effects can be one of the first steps our experienced SERVPRO team takes upon arrival to your residence. In many ways, removing circulating contaminants and particles can make the home safer for responding technicians to get fire damage mitigation started.

Several practices can get employed when removing airborne contaminants and potential hazards in the environment for both our technicians and the occupants of the house. There is urgency in air filtration when occupants do not get displaced by structure fires or kitchen flare-ups. Fire damage smoke remediation of these particles requires HEPA filtration products and devices, such as:

  • Hydroxyl machines
  • Air scrubbers
  • Negative pressure machines
  • Charcoal filtering devices

What Smoke Remediation Practices Remove Soot Soiling?

Exposed materials can often allow for soot and smoke particles to come to rest. Smoke remediation for these occurrences involves any practice designed to remove smoke residues and protect the underlying material. Soot can be a destructive presence to building materials, namely due to its acidic composition. Prolonged exposure to these carcinogenic particles heaping on the surface of building materials can ruin the finish of wood elements and strip paint. Choosing the right cleaning approach is not a universal science, as different methods work to preserve materials. Some of the options commonly needed in fire damaged homes after smoke damage include:

  • Surface cleaning with detergents
  • Soda and media blasting
  • Abrasive cleaning techniques
  • Controlled demolition

Are Repairs Necessary for Fire Damaged Homes?

After fire damage, smoke remediation is often required. Smoke remediation might appear a surface issue, requiring various cleaning and restoration tactics, but it can also require repairs and reconstruction. Fire and smoke damage can spread quickly throughout a property, making the need for repairs and build back inevitable in many fire-damaged homes.

Often, certain heavily exposed building materials and contents must get removed and discarded after prolonged exposure to fire damage like soot and smoke residues. With a general contractor license, we can offer multiple services that can provide comprehensive support from our technicians' initial arrival to the reconstruction of fire-damaged homes after fire and smoke damage.

Fire damage can be a challenging obstacle to restore in area homes, but our experienced SERVPRO of Oyster Bay team can help. Give us a call anytime at (516) 464-3300.

A Quick Response and Fast Restoration When Fire Damage Occurs in Glen Cove Homes

Black and white map of Glen Cove, NY We are here to help the residents of Glen Cove with fire damage restoration.

SERVPRO Technicians Provide Glen Cove Dwellers with Fire Damage Restoration Services to Make it "Like it never even happened."

Glen Cove city is located on the north shore of Long Island. According to the 2010 census, the city is home to over 26,964 people. Between 1680 and 1917, Glen Cove was under the jurisdiction of the town of Oyster Bay. Due to its appealing location on Long Island Sound, this city attracts many people, and they can participate in different locally themed activities.

If you want to learn about this area's early inhabitants, you can visit the Garvies Point Museum. It is set amidst a sixty-two-acre reserve, and it provides visitors with an insight into the culture and history of the Native Americans who lived in Long Island and other areas in New York. From the Native American gallery, you can learn how people migrated from Asia to America and how their cultural practices evolved as they moved to different regions of the continent.

If you like hiking to stay in shape, the Welwyn Preserve is a great place to do that. It sits on the land that Harold Irving Pratt, a petroleum heir, owned. The large nature reserve covers over 200 acres. It has four marked trails that lead visitors to a salt marsh, swamps and freshwater ponds, a stretch of shoreline, and a stream that cuts through thick woodlands. While visiting the preserve, you can see some of its wildlife, including a hundred bird species, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.

The History of Glen Cove City

In the early 20th century, people considered the city as part of the North Shore's Gold Coast since wealthy businessmen like J.P. Morgan, Prybil, Phipps, and Pratt developed large country estates along the waterfront. During this period, the city hosted several successful manufacturing companies that attracted many immigrants from Eastern Europe, Ireland, and Italy. A good number of the population that resided in the city worked in manufacturing companies, local agriculture, and retail businesses.

For thousands of years, the city has preserved the cultures of indigenous people. The English migrants from New England used Glen Cove as a port before 1668 and named it "Moscheto." Joseph Carpenter bought around 2000 acres of land on May 24th, 1668, northwest of the Town of Oyster Bay. He later admitted four other residents of Oyster Bay as project partners. The settlement was later named Musketa Cove Plantation.

After the Second World War, the area's population grew rapidly, just like other suburbs. After completing residential developments on farms and pastureland, most of the residents were the second or third-generation descendants of Eastern European immigrants. Most African Americans who reside in the city are descendants of slaves from the colonial period, while others migrated to New York during the first half of the 20th-century's Great Migration.

Glen Cove city has an extensive waterfront area with three public beaches, including:

  • Morgan Beach
  • Prybil Beach
  • Crescent Beach

For those who love sailing, the city has several sailing clubs and secure boating storage. The Brewer's Boardyard is the only existing yard in the city. The city also hosts sailboat racing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. On Saturdays, the event is held in the afternoon. Tourists and residents can watch the event from various points on Garvies Point Preserve hills and the neighboring village of Sea Cliff. Those who reside, work or spend most of the time at the waterfront have a saying that goes, "if you hear the train, it is going to rain." That means when the train whistle blows, the wind from the east is coming, and a storm is on its way.

The City's Rich Culture

Glen Cove is rich in different cultures. The city is home to the headquarters of the (ASDA) American Stamp Dealers Association. In July and August, free concerts take place during the Morgan Park Music Festival in Morgan Park.

The city is home to several other historic mansions and buildings, such as the U.S. Post Office, built during the Great Depression in 1932, and the Justice Court Building. The local authorities renovated the two buildings and adapted them for use.

However, fire incidents in the city can ruin historical monuments. For instance, on January 6th, 2018, a stubborn, raging fire destroyed a 120-year-old mansion. According to fire officials, the strong wind and low water pressure contributed significantly to the property's loss. The $1.6 million mansion featured 11 bedrooms, two partial bathrooms, and four full bathrooms.  When a fire incident occurs, it is essential to hire professional restorers.

How SERVPRO Technicians help Glen Cove property owners with Fire Damage restoration

Fires can cause severe property damage. Secondary fire damage can take place shortly after a fire incident. The solution that results when smoke residues mix with water can cause yellowing of carpets and furniture and corrosion on metallic surfaces like kitchen appliances. Charcoal-like odors may linger across the property, including the unaffected areas. To get your property to its pre-damage state within a short period, thorough cleanup is necessary.

Restoring your property to its preloss state is not an easy task. You need a professional restorer to help you restore damaged structures and contents and clean up the affected surfaces. The entire restoration process can be a headache, especially for inexperienced persons. Therefore, it is vital to involve an experienced restoration expert with the necessary equipment and tools to handle the task.

At SERVPRO, we use state-of-the-art equipment and advanced products to complete the fire damage restoration process. For instance, we can use a reducing bleach solution like a natural fabric brightener mixed with shampoo super concentrate to clean oxidized stains from furniture and wool carpeting.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Includes:

  • Conducting a thorough property inspection to determine the intensity of the damage.
  • Removing soot and debris on all surfaces to minimize damage and improve air quality.
  • Removing house contents damaged beyond restoration.
  • Drying wet surfaces in the property using our high-tech equipment to speed up the process.
  • Deep cleaning and deodorizing the property using our innovative techniques.

Depending on the damage intensity, SERVPRO technicians can completely restore your property within a few days. We can work fast and efficiently to get you and your family back to your normal routine.

A fire can cause severe primary and secondary damage to your property if you delay the restoration process. Contact SERVPRO of Oyster Bay immediately to minimize damage and restore your property to its pre-fire state. Talk to us today at (516) 464-3300.

Fires leave smoke and soot behind them, and hot smoke tends to move into colder areas, but a grease fire burns differently from a wood surface or a burning polymer fire.

Natural elements tend to leave fine dust behind, whereas human-made materials result in a sticky residue requiring different cleaning solutions. Beyond the visual residue, homeowners worry about the smell left behind, which our team can help eliminate with the following-

  • Charcoal-activated filters to remove particles in the air

As we clean your home, we may use HEPA vacuums to remove particles from each surface along with cleaning solutions, and we complement those efforts by applying some of the following equipment to treat the air-

  • Air scrubbers
  • Ozone generators
  • Hydroxyl generators

Our team at SERVPRO of Oyster Bay is here to protect you and your health when disaster strikes. Call us at (516) 464-3300 and let us coordinate the restoration process. Like you, we want to minimize any loss while leaving your home, “Like it never even happened.”

Excessive Lint can Cause a Fire in your Glen Cove Home.

Homeowners everywhere, including Glen Cove, may occasionally forget to clean the lint trap in their clothes dryer. Ignoring this simple task can mark the beginning of a challenging time by posing a threat to your laundry area. A simple spark can ignite the lint, causing clothes, detergent, and cleaner to burst into flames.

Fire damage in Glen Cove caused by a household accident does not have to be overwhelming. Our SERVPRO team is available around-the-clock to respond to your emergency and put our knowledge and expertise to work. Working within safety parameters, we move quickly to avoid worsening conditions and to mitigate your loss.

Are household cleaners enough to clean fire damage?

The temptation to wipe everything clean with a household product is understandable, but you risk causing more damage to some surfaces. At SERVPRO, we consider our actions based on the item we are cleaning and target product application to each one. Plastics and polymers leave behind a residue different from wood and natural fibers, and we make sure to allow for this difference. Our team typically employs the following-

  • Abrasive cleaning solutions
  • Airborne cleaners (also help with odor)
  • Dry sponge cleaning

We also inspect the ducting system that ports the hot, moist air to the exterior of your home. Lint in the filter may also indicate a restricted flow of forced air from the clothes dryer. We can use mechanical devices like whisks and vacuums to free the airways.

When disaster strikes, SERVPRO of Oyster Bay is ready to help. Call us at (516) 464-3300 and let us leave your laundry room “Like it never even happened.”

Can I Get Ash Out of Carpets?

SERVPRO Fire Damage Technicians are Experts at Removing Soils from your Oyster Bay Home.

How does ash get into carpets?

Furnace puff backs, as well as open fires, can spit ash into your Oyster Bay home. These damages can affect carpets, particularly severely, because carpet fibers are naturally porous. Foot traffic over the affected area can drive ash or soot further into the carpet fibers while applying water can result in adverse damage to the laminated layers themselves or set the soot even deeper into the fibers. Carpet restoration requires a complex skillset and comprehensive knowledge of how different types of fibers, soils, or ash respond to cleaning methods. Our team can assess the level of harm and proceed with a tailored approach to restore your carpets rather than replace them, whenever possible.

Can I Remove Ash from Carpets Myself?

There is a high risk of worsening fire damage in your Oyster Bay home by applying the wrong products or solutions to a carpet. You should check with the manufacturer to find out which solutions they recommend for carpet cleaning. Some rugs may only respond well to dry cleaning methods like vacuuming or emulsifying powders. Others may benefit from hot water extraction methods. SERVPRO technicians usually follow up a carpet cleaning solution with a rotary brush to buffer the carpet and return fibers to their preloss condition.

How can I test carpets to find the right cleaning response?

  • Check with the carpet manufacturer for recommended cleaning methods
  • Apply dry-cleaning methods first to avoid potential damages
  • Test cleaning solutions on a small, discrete area of the fibers before applying to the full-carpet
  • Conduct a pH level test on ashes to determine the correct cleaning product; neutral, acidic, or alkaline

Or, you can call SERVPRO to dispatch a (CCT) carpet cleaning technician accredited by the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and garner your best chance of salvaging your prized carpeting.
