The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) purchased the property and contents of the house from the family, opening it for visitations in 1953 before donating it to the National Park Service (NPS) for the American people to enjoy. 

The home includes many hunting trophies and works of art depicting family, heroes, and nature scenes. Although he was a big game hunter, he was also a conservationist. During his presidency, he established 150 national forests, five national parks, 51federal bird sanctuaries, all on over 230 million acres of public land. Despite being born in New York City, he loved nature and worked very hard to preserve it. During his presidency in 1903, he even went camping with the famous naturalist John Muir.
