Customers expansion tank on the boiler blew.
This left her basement floor and walls to take on water damage.
Being that the basement had no dehumidifier prior to the event this caused mold growth, and condensation all around the basement walls and ceiling.
SERVPRO of Oyster bay came in and removed all wet contents. We set up air scrubbers and a dehumidifier to dry out the remaining moisture. The owner was thrilled. She was concerned over her asthma. The clean up was quick and she said our technicians answered all her questions.

June of 2022 broke several records for temperature highs throughout the country this year. Experts believe this is only the beginning of what will surely be a very hot summer. In cities across the south records are being broken for consecutive days of low temperatures staying over 80 degrees where no relief from heat can be found, even at night. This prolonged drought and high heat are setting up many of these areas for flash floods if and when rains do come. This is because the hardened, dry ground will not be able to absorb water quickly enough if a large rain or tropical storm were to sweep through states like Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. Large rain events in these areas are not uncommon during hurricane season. In fact, over the past few years it has been slow moving tropical storms and hurricanes carrying tons of moisture that have caused the most property damage to homes and commercial properties in the United States. There is little people can do to prepare for these types of storms other than to listen to their local authorities and be ready to move if a home or commercial property is in the path of storms or flooding. Of course if damage does occur we will be available to help. Our team of experienced storm management and disaster restoration technicians are prepared for when the next big storm comes to New England, New York, or anywhere in the country if we are called to help!

The threat of flooding from a storm surge in a hurricane is real. A meteorologist will use storm surge to calculate the possibility of damage. The statistic measures the number of feet they anticipate the tide will exceed what is considered normal high tide. We've seen the storm surge effects first-hand in New York City/Staten Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island & Massachusetts.
However, we are seeing an increase in flood damage due to flooding caused by slow moving rain & thunderstorms which can at times drop an unusual amount of rain. These storms have been responsible for more property loss than storm surge in recent years. This is due to the fact that slow moving storms can bring down torrential rains in larger areas. In some cases, one area could see more rain in 48 hours that they receive in a full month. This extreme rainfall causes floods in rivers, storm drains, low-lying places and other areas.
SERVPRO has the ability to respond to extreme weather conditions. We work hard to determine the best ways to respond in the immediate aftermath to any event and to provide all remediation and construction.

This week we are set to experience some colder weather and may see some snow accumulation to kick off the first week of the new year. As we head into the colder months of January and February it is important to remember that your local SERVPRO is available if your property suffers damage due to cold weather.
Typically in our area, when we see long spells of cold weather, water supply pipes that are not well insulated can freeze and burst. If left unnoticed for a long period of time the damage to the home or commercial property can be catastrophic even requiring homeowners to move out temporarily while extensive repairs are underway.
Another type of damage from winter weather can come from ice dams that typical start at night when water from snow melting on a roof top freezes and expands slightly opening a rooftop at the eves and allowing water damage to occur within the walls of the structure. If you see large icicles hanging from one particular area of your home or commercial property this may indicate an ice dam.
Our team is available 24/7 to help if your home or commercial property is damaged to winter weather. Call us now!

It's that time of the year again. This season is jam-packed with special occasions, events, gatherings, holidays, and other activities. This season is full of warmth and joy. However, it is important to ensure that your warm fuzzy feelings are safe and secure.
It is almost impossible to live in a region that experiences heavy winter weather, so it is crucial to be prepared. Let's take a look at some things to remember as winter draws near, while fall is slowly disappearing.
Intentional, clear and consistent communication is key to keeping your family safe. Make sure your family has an emergency plan to ensure everyone is prepared in case of an emergency. Practice the plan frequently and practice it regularly.
Make sure your vehicle is winter-proofed. Have your vehicle winter-proofed. Rotate or replace your tires if they are showing signs of wear. Get new windshield wipers!
Frrozen pipes could cause severe damage in already-dangerous deep freezing conditions. We are not going to lie when we tell you that this is something you do not want. To relieve pressure, let the water flow from your showerhead and faucets.
Check the heating system in your home, whether it is gas, electrical or other. You can make sure that your heating system is ready to withstand the winter storms. Getting it serviced early will help prevent an outage later.
You should ensure that your wood-burning furnace or fireplace is well ventilated and clean. Also, you must use safety precautions when lighting fires.
You can seal your windows and add insulation to your attic now to prevent cold air from blowing around.
Winter may be a time when your pets have to come in, even if they are used to being outside. You can provide a warm place for your pets to rest until the weather warms up.
If you have livestock, or animals that spend winter outdoors, ensure that they are provided with shelter and water that will not freeze.
As they melt, snow and ice can cause deadly floods. These can pose serious dangers and should be closely monitored, from rooftops to local water bodies.
Allow local news and alerts to inform you about flood dangers in your area. Always leave these notifications on.
In the event of winter storms causing flooding or damage to your property, call SERVPRO immediately for quick, effective solutions.

Winter is coming and colder weather is on the horizon. You should inspect your commercial or residential property to see if there are any areas that need heating or insulation that can prevent freezing weather from damaging your property. This type of damage may cause thousands of dollars of damage depending on the size of your home or commercial property. It could also require several weeks (if not more!) of construction.
Check all areas of your property where water pipes run. Check pipes near exterior walls, basements, attics, and other unheated areas. Garages or pipes in colder parts of your property. To determine if the temperature inside the space is higher than outside, place an exterior thermometer.
These areas may need to be insulate or heated. These small steps can help prevent major disasters. Call our office 24 hours a day if you have questions!

Candles can bring beauty and scent to your home. Homes can also be damaged by fire if candles are not kept in a safe place.
After leaving a candle in the room and blowing a piece of paper into it, a homeowner required assistance to put out the fire. Although firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, smoke damage was extensive.
Take Charred Items Out
The candle's contents were too damaged to be cleaned in the room, so they had to be removed. Without homeowner consent or an adjuster, the techs won't dispose of any items found in the room. This allows property owners to know the status of restoration work and ensures SERVPRO® is covered by their insurance.
Test Before You Clean
It is important to test any smoke residues in a room before you attempt to clean them. The amount of smoke residue will depend on the temperature of the fire and the items burned. So, both dry smoke and moist smoke may be present in the same room.
Techs use dry cleaning sponges to remove dried smoke from walls and other painted surfaces. To remove wet smoke from walls and other painted surfaces, solvents are required.
Bedroom Odor Control
It is essential to get rid of charred materials. This will reduce the stench of fire. When a fire is started, hot air expands and pushes the odorous smoke out of porous materials. Thermal fogging is one way to get rid of the odors.
Duct Inspection
The fire was contained to the bedroom, but the family used the HVAC. High potential for soot to get through the conduit work was there. SERVPRO® technicians cleaned the ducts to eliminate any lingering odors.
SERVPRO® returns properties that have been damaged by fire back to their original condition.

Mold spores are everywhere in Oyster Bay, and they thrive on warm, moist air with natural food sources. These conditions can exist in our homes, especially if there is a small water leak or even from an unvented shower. Mold colonies can form rapidly with the right conditions, and often the first indication is a musty odor that becomes stronger as the growth becomes more established.
SEERVPRO can do a complete inspection of your home in Oyster Bay for mold damage and mold colonies forming in unusual places. Common areas are under window air conditioning, inside showers, under sinks in the bathroom and kitchen, and anywhere there may be a leak allowing moisture to accumulate.
Once we have identified the location, our team contains the area to prevent mold spores from transferring throughout your home as we clean and disinfect the area. Depending on the materials involved, we may have to remove porous materials since they may be too damaged to leave in place. Hard surfaces and non-porous surfaces can be cleaned, disinfected, and dried.
SERVPRO can inspect your entire home for mold and damage, clean and disinfect the area, and advise how to avoid future infestations. Our services include:

Homeowners can reduce damage from water leaks in Oyster Bay homes and businesses if the water is cleaned up quickly before secondary damage occurs. For example, carpets soaked in water can delaminate if they are not dried quickly. Colors leach from objects left on the floor and may damage other materials close to them. Wood floors can absorb moisture, swell causing cupping and displacement. Mold colonies can become established in as little as 24 hours.
SERVPRO’s fast response team can be onsite in less than four hours after your call about water damage in your Oyster Bay home. We quickly assess the situation and begin removing excess water, moving contents to a staging area to dry them and protect them. Drying mats are utilized on hardwood floors. Water extractors are used on carpets to extract water from the carpeting and the underpad.
Our fast response, water extraction, and drying can also prevent mold from becoming an issue. Mold can cause health effects. Our rapid response can also minimize damage to drywall and particle board, common materials used in homes.

When we conduct House Fire Clean Up operations, we often encounter materials with deeply embedded fire residues. Rather than simply covering and concealing these damages, we work hard to remove them entirely through special care methods.
When we begin a fire damage restoration project in Glen Cove, one of the first things we do is analyze the situation and determine what types of materials have been affected. Porous materials such as wood and carpet are more challenging to remove fire residues than hard surfaces. These materials tend to pose the most problems with:
Thankfully, SERVPRO technicians have several ways of removing residues from these materials. Many surfaces and objects receive treatment from agitation techniques that use motion and vibration to shake off ash and smoke. Structural materials may experience water and air pressure treatments, rotating brushes, or even sand-blasting treatments. Smaller objects and delicate materials may be treated with advanced techniques such as ultrasonic baths. These baths send ultrasonic waves through a cleaning solution to remove even the faintest traces of smoke in your belongings. With these and many other agitation-based cleaning methods, SERVPRO makes your home look “Like it never even happened.”
Local homeowners have trusted SERVPRO of Oyster Bay for years with challenging and time-sensitive damage restoration projects. Call us 24/7 at (516) 464-3300 for our emergency services.

For most of our flood restoration projects, much of our attention focuses on affected floor materials. Some of the most visible damages can happen to wood floors, but these damages rarely become permanent with our expertise.
We commonly encounter problems with wood flooring in Oyster Bay bars with flood damage. After absorbing water, most types of wood swell and warp, sometimes creating trip hazards in the process. While these problems may appear severe, part of our Water Damage Repairs strategy involves treatments that can return most affected areas to their normal appearances.
Wood can warp in multiple ways depending on the boards' size, shape, and material. We also must be alert for contamination if the flooding was caused by groundwater or a sewage backup. Most hardwood floors experience either cupping, raising the edges of each board, or crowning, a puffing-up of the center parts of the boards. Regardless of the problems faced, our general treatment strategy remains the same: we arrive as fast as possible to the incident site and begin careful drying measures while monitoring for mold growth and subfloor damage. You should call us immediately for:

Chemical containment is only one step of the SERVPRO fire odor removal process. Soon after establishing containment, our fire damage restoration specialists use special vapor control products to eliminate odors. These special pellet-based products are developed and used specifically for vapor control after a house fire. It is quite a large city, with a population of almost 300,000 as of the 2010 census.
Oyster Bay History:
Long Island was once occupied by the Lenape people, who originally hailed from Delaware. Once European settlement began, the English took over, which eventually led to the area coming under the control of New York. Officially, Oyster Bay became a town by 1687.
Places to See in Oyster Bay & Surrounding Area:
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site: This colonial home was once lived in by former US president, Teddy Rosevelt, and his family. It has not been occupied by another family since, and has been turned into a museum modernly.

Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park: This park is ocean-side and honors the 26th President of the United States. Picnic with your family and enjoy the fresh ocean air.
Any Local Seafood Pub: When in New York, or any "old town" Eastern United State, find yourself a locally hailed seafood pub or eatery. Long Island is known for its fresh fish, lobster, crab, and other seafood delights. It is a staple of the area and a big part of the culture.

After fire damage, Oyster Bay homes can struggle with multiple threatening effects. Soot can often be one of the most challenging obstacles for restoration professionals due to potential health hazards and the consequences of these carcinogenic particles on exposed surfaces and contents. We have a comprehensive approach to fire damage restoration, including:
Airborne particulates can be an underrated threat of smoke damage in area homes after fire damage. As challenging as ash and smoke residues can be in fire-damaged homes, smoke remediation of these effects can be one of the first steps our experienced SERVPRO team takes upon arrival to your residence. In many ways, removing circulating contaminants and particles can make the home safer for responding technicians to get fire damage mitigation started.
Several practices can get employed when removing airborne contaminants and potential hazards in the environment for both our technicians and the occupants of the house. There is urgency in air filtration when occupants do not get displaced by structure fires or kitchen flare-ups. Fire damage smoke remediation of these particles requires HEPA filtration products and devices, such as:
Exposed materials can often allow for soot and smoke particles to come to rest. Smoke remediation for these occurrences involves any practice designed to remove smoke residues and protect the underlying material. Soot can be a destructive presence to building materials, namely due to its acidic composition. Prolonged exposure to these carcinogenic particles heaping on the surface of building materials can ruin the finish of wood elements and strip paint. Choosing the right cleaning approach is not a universal science, as different methods work to preserve materials. Some of the options commonly needed in fire damaged homes after smoke damage include:
After fire damage, smoke remediation is often required. Smoke remediation might appear a surface issue, requiring various cleaning and restoration tactics, but it can also require repairs and reconstruction. Fire and smoke damage can spread quickly throughout a property, making the need for repairs and build back inevitable in many fire-damaged homes.
Often, certain heavily exposed building materials and contents must get removed and discarded after prolonged exposure to fire damage like soot and smoke residues. With a general contractor license, we can offer multiple services that can provide comprehensive support from our technicians' initial arrival to the reconstruction of fire-damaged homes after fire and smoke damage.
Fire damage can be a challenging obstacle to restore in area homes, but our experienced SERVPRO of Oyster Bay team can help. Give us a call anytime at (516) 464-3300.

Flooding is not limited to warm weather. Heavy winter snows can melt and cause rivers to overflow. This can mean floodwaters are entering and contaminating homes. Many times, structural vulnerabilities can allow water to enter the house from above as well. That is when you need emergency mitigation.
The Type of Material Determines Drying Times
When flood damage occurs in Oyster Bay, our team can offer emergency mitigation efforts such as tarping the roof and containing floodwaters. Water extraction and decontamination are crucial. How fast things dry depends on the level of saturation and the type of material.
Porous items can often be dried in as little as 24 hours, while the other things can take days. It all depends on the needed equipment and how much moisture the technicians are dealing with.

Every town has its secrets. Oyster Bay has a rich history in secrets, mainly since it played a critical role during the Revolutionary War in General George Washington's spy ring. Today many of the most historically interesting areas are hidden from sight.
Hidden Cemeteries of Oyster Bay
Cemeteries are fascinating places. They tell stories of the past, of the people who lived and died in the area. There are many colonial-era graves in the small town of Oyster Bay, but you may have to look twice to see them. These cemeteries are spread throughout the city. The town grew up around them. They are open to the public, but the odd places they are located might make you think you are trespassing. Visitors can find them:
• At end of alleys
• Tucked behind driveways
• Running alongside private home
• Surrounded by gardens
Culper Junior's Gravesite
One of these sites, Fort Hill, is hidden from easy view. You have to know where you are looking, and even then, it can be hard to find. This location is the resting place of Robert Townsend. Townsend was known by the code name "Culper Junior" during the War for Independence. He worked as a spy for General Washington and was a key player in the downfall of Major John Andre and Benedict Arnold. Their goal was to surrender West Point to the enemy. Without the knowledge that Townsend helped uncover, who knows what the consequences might have been? Robert's sister Sarah was said to have been the first person to receive a Valentine's Day card in the U.S. Also buried in this plot is John Townsend, a rich merchant whose gravesite dates back 1668.
Raynham Hall Museum
This museum is connected to the Fort Hill cemetery as it was part of the spy ring that brought about Benedict Arnold's downfall. In 1776, after the Colonial Americans were defeated at the Battle of Long Island, Raynham Hall was occupied by the British Army. The home was owned by Samuel Townsend, whose son Robert joined the spy ring after the home was garrisoned. "Culper Junior" was able to move about easily and gather information due to his position as a merchant. Today it is a museum dedicated to preserving the town's history. Visitors can take a step back in time to the colonial era and enjoy artifacts such as a letter from George Washington. If you visit the museum, be sure to be on the lookout for Sarah Townsend, who is said to wander the home, still waiting on her British sweetheart to return.
Any home or building can be subject to water damage from a burst pipe or plumbing problem. Museums and historic buildings are no exception. Using a professional water restoration company like SERVPRO is always a wise move. We can restore water damaged content such as:
• Furniture
• Household goods
• Carpets and rugs
• Books and papers

The town of Oyster Bay, situated in the heart of Nassau County, extends from the North to the South Shore of Long Island. There is also a small hamlet by the name of Oyster Bay on the North Shore. Oyster Bay is within commuting distance to New York City but also offers charm all of its own.
The most widely known historic site in the area is Sagamore Hill, Theodore Roosevelt's summer White House. Theodore Roosevelt grew up in New York City but spent his summers in Long Island. At the age of 22, in 1880, Roosevelt bought 155 acres of land and had the house built. In 1886 it officially became Sagamore Hill, which later became the Summer White House during Roosevelt's summer years as president from 1902-1908.
Theodore Roosevelt lived in his Sagamore Hill until 1919. However, it remains virtually untouched with original furnishings. In addition to the house, there was a farm operation on the property. A lot of the food the family ate came from the farm. The farm operation included a vegetable garden, apple orchard, chickens, turkey and pigs for slaughter, and even dairy cows.
Edith Roosevelt, Theodore's wife, lived in the home until she died in 1948. The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) purchased the property and contents of the house from the family, opening it for visitations in 1953 before donating it to the National Park Service (NPS) for the American people to enjoy.
The home includes many hunting trophies and works of art depicting family, heroes, and nature scenes. Although he was a big game hunter, he was also a conservationist. During his presidency, he established 150 national forests, five national parks, 51federal bird sanctuaries, all on over 230 million acres of public land. Despite being born in New York City, he loved nature and worked very hard to preserve it. During his presidency in 1903, he even went camping with the famous naturalist John Muir.
Being close to the ocean in a relatively humid climate coupled with older homes inevitably means that you may experience mold in your home. Our trained technicians are skilled in mold remediation. However, there are some different strategies that you can do at home to help limit mold growth.

Within the state of New York, the town of Oyster Bay happens to be the easternmost out of the three towns situated in Nassau County. As part of the metropolitan area of New York, Oyster Bay is the only town within the county extending from the north to south shores of Long Island. When the United States Census was taken in 2010, the town had a population of 293,214 people.
Inside the town of Oyster Bay, you will find 18 hamlets and 18 villages. Due to this number, the United States Postal Service organized all of these 36 locations into 30 different zip codes that get served by 20 post offices in the area. While the boundaries do not always correlate, every post office will have the same name as the Oyster Bay village or hamlet.
The name Oyster Bay may seem familiar because it also happens to be the name of a hamlet that is located on the North Shore. Close to this hamlet in Cove Neck village, there is a building named Sagamore Hill. This is the former residence, referred to as the summer White House, of former president Theodore Roosevelt. Today, this building stands as a museum.
Diving Further into the History of Oyster Bay, New York
For thousands of years, there have been various cultures of indigenous peoples in the area now known as Oyster Bay. By the year 1600, the band that inhabited the area was known as the Matinecock, and they were made up of Lenape people from Delaware.
In 1639, the Dutch West India Company bought a parcel of land from the local Native Americans on Long Island. Englishmen purchased land located in Hempstead in 1643, which included land purchased by the Dutch back in 1639. A Dutch director then granted a patent to the English for Hempstead in 1644. Around the same time, the Dutch also gave the English settlements for Newtown, Flushing, and Jamaica.
The settlement of Oyster Bay received a charter in 1667 from the newer English colony of New York – then becoming Oyster Bay Township. By the time 1687 came around, the last parcel of land was sold by the Native Americans.

Glen Cove city is located on the north shore of Long Island. According to the 2010 census, the city is home to over 26,964 people. Between 1680 and 1917, Glen Cove was under the jurisdiction of the town of Oyster Bay. Due to its appealing location on Long Island Sound, this city attracts many people, and they can participate in different locally themed activities.
If you want to learn about this area's early inhabitants, you can visit the Garvies Point Museum. It is set amidst a sixty-two-acre reserve, and it provides visitors with an insight into the culture and history of the Native Americans who lived in Long Island and other areas in New York. From the Native American gallery, you can learn how people migrated from Asia to America and how their cultural practices evolved as they moved to different regions of the continent.
If you like hiking to stay in shape, the Welwyn Preserve is a great place to do that. It sits on the land that Harold Irving Pratt, a petroleum heir, owned. The large nature reserve covers over 200 acres. It has four marked trails that lead visitors to a salt marsh, swamps and freshwater ponds, a stretch of shoreline, and a stream that cuts through thick woodlands. While visiting the preserve, you can see some of its wildlife, including a hundred bird species, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals.
The History of Glen Cove City
In the early 20th century, people considered the city as part of the North Shore's Gold Coast since wealthy businessmen like J.P. Morgan, Prybil, Phipps, and Pratt developed large country estates along the waterfront. During this period, the city hosted several successful manufacturing companies that attracted many immigrants from Eastern Europe, Ireland, and Italy. A good number of the population that resided in the city worked in manufacturing companies, local agriculture, and retail businesses.
For thousands of years, the city has preserved the cultures of indigenous people. The English migrants from New England used Glen Cove as a port before 1668 and named it "Moscheto." Joseph Carpenter bought around 2000 acres of land on May 24th, 1668, northwest of the Town of Oyster Bay. He later admitted four other residents of Oyster Bay as project partners. The settlement was later named Musketa Cove Plantation.
After the Second World War, the area's population grew rapidly, just like other suburbs. After completing residential developments on farms and pastureland, most of the residents were the second or third-generation descendants of Eastern European immigrants. Most African Americans who reside in the city are descendants of slaves from the colonial period, while others migrated to New York during the first half of the 20th-century's Great Migration.
Glen Cove city has an extensive waterfront area with three public beaches, including:
For those who love sailing, the city has several sailing clubs and secure boating storage. The Brewer's Boardyard is the only existing yard in the city. The city also hosts sailboat racing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings. On Saturdays, the event is held in the afternoon. Tourists and residents can watch the event from various points on Garvies Point Preserve hills and the neighboring village of Sea Cliff. Those who reside, work or spend most of the time at the waterfront have a saying that goes, "if you hear the train, it is going to rain." That means when the train whistle blows, the wind from the east is coming, and a storm is on its way.
The City's Rich Culture
Glen Cove is rich in different cultures. The city is home to the headquarters of the (ASDA) American Stamp Dealers Association. In July and August, free concerts take place during the Morgan Park Music Festival in Morgan Park.
The city is home to several other historic mansions and buildings, such as the U.S. Post Office, built during the Great Depression in 1932, and the Justice Court Building. The local authorities renovated the two buildings and adapted them for use.
However, fire incidents in the city can ruin historical monuments. For instance, on January 6th, 2018, a stubborn, raging fire destroyed a 120-year-old mansion. According to fire officials, the strong wind and low water pressure contributed significantly to the property's loss. The $1.6 million mansion featured 11 bedrooms, two partial bathrooms, and four full bathrooms. When a fire incident occurs, it is essential to hire professional restorers.
How SERVPRO Technicians help Glen Cove property owners with Fire Damage restoration
Fires can cause severe property damage. Secondary fire damage can take place shortly after a fire incident. The solution that results when smoke residues mix with water can cause yellowing of carpets and furniture and corrosion on metallic surfaces like kitchen appliances. Charcoal-like odors may linger across the property, including the unaffected areas. To get your property to its pre-damage state within a short period, thorough cleanup is necessary.
Restoring your property to its preloss state is not an easy task. You need a professional restorer to help you restore damaged structures and contents and clean up the affected surfaces. The entire restoration process can be a headache, especially for inexperienced persons. Therefore, it is vital to involve an experienced restoration expert with the necessary equipment and tools to handle the task.
At SERVPRO, we use state-of-the-art equipment and advanced products to complete the fire damage restoration process. For instance, we can use a reducing bleach solution like a natural fabric brightener mixed with shampoo super concentrate to clean oxidized stains from furniture and wool carpeting.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Includes:

Contaminants in the water are an issue for all flooding scenarios in Oyster Bay, requiring storing in tanks for appropriate, regulated disposal off-site the extracted water that cannot be safely directed to a treated sewer line. Other hazards beyond the tainted category of the water also can complicate storm damage recovery. Reputable flood restoration firms assess and control these hazards to keep occupants and workers safe and prevent further damage to structural components.
When water invades an Oyster Bay home, flood damage restoration needs pop up all through the structure. Water from rainstorm-related overland flooding spreads across pavement, dirt, and lawns before pushing into lower levels. Storm surge adds to the mix pouring into homes from ground level. Do not forget about the rain pounding on roofs and entering through broken windows, doors, and siding damaged by wind-driven debris and toppled trees. You can see the water from all these sources inside your home. Ominously, vast quantities of storm and flood water can also hide, creating conditions that can deteriorate into catastrophe fast if not discerned and managed.
Rainwater from roof, window, and siding breaches, as well as overland flooding, can fill cavities
The collected water is heavy, and the pressure it brings to bear can cause the collapse of structures. Waiting for drainage to occur on its own is not an option because of the risk of physical injury, substantial damage to building materials, and secondary harm like mold. SERVPRO crews determine where the water hides through testing with sensitive water and moisture detection and measuring devices. Then we use strategies to release the water as an initial step in flood water restoration:
The well-trained and experienced flood damage restoration crews at SERVPRO of Oyster Bay skip no steps when delivering outstanding outcomes. Call us at (516) 464-3300 to schedule a flooding recovery assessment.

When you cope with a plumbing rupture or an appliance malfunction, the water can spread rapidly. The first thing upon which water damage recovery professionals focus is mitigation. Simply put, we need to mitigate, or halt, the incursion of water into building materials and the contents inside your Oyster Bay home. The reason is straightforward -- if items remain dry or moisture is removed quickly, it is unlikely that they will sustain damage.
What Are Examples of Professional Mitigation Interventions?
The strategies we use for water damage mitigation in your Oyster Bay home vary depending on the affected materials. Here are some common scenarios we might see and the approaches we select from among to respond:
Wet padding and carpeting
SERVPRO crews consider padding removal as it is relatively inexpensive to replace, and taking it out reduces the wicking of water into carpet fibers. Wanded extractors moving from the dry areas to wet mitigates the migration of water. Final weighted extraction, often with technicians standing on the equipment, pulls the bulk of the water out in preparation for the drying phase.
Water percolating through hardwood to subfloors
Finished hardwood surfaces resist water penetration well, but the joints between planks or strips permit water to drain to the unfinished plywood substrate. The damp subfloor transfers moisture to the hardwood's unfinished back and sides, causing cupping, a type of warping. Technicians use adhesive floor mats to pull water from all layers using negative air pressure delivered through attached hoses, mitigating progressive damage to floors.
Water collected in building cavities
Fluids caught between walls, over ceilings, and in other recesses require extraction. SERVPRO project managers evaluate how to most efficiently remove the trapped water as failure to mitigate results in the continual breakdown of porous materials and the creation of an environment conducive to mold growth. The choices for mitigation include:
• Sawn or drilled release holes in walls
• Flood cuts, where wallboard is removed from stud to stud from the floor up to several inches above the waterline
• Weep holes, punched through ceiling tiles to drain water
Guided by research-based best practices, SERVPRO of Oyster Bay assesses, plans, and implements efficient and effective mitigation in your water damaged home. Call us at (516) 464-3300 to learn about your options.

The smells that build up in a property after fire incidents are uncomfortable. However, the processes needed to remove them can also present some challenges. SERVPRO can deodorize your Oyster Bay property using the most convenient approaches.
What challenges can I encounter during fire smoke odor cleanup at my Oyster Bay home?
Odor removal requires a proper understanding of the situation. Odorous materials can be suspended in the air, deposited on the surface of materials, or deeply embedded in materials if they are porous. Our SERVPRO technicians recognize this, thus tackling the problem from different angles. When cleaning surfaces and contents and surfaces affected by the fire, we mix water-based deodorizers with the cleaning solutions to remove odors from the surfaces. We also ventilate the property using high-velocity air movers that can move 1000 to 3000 cubic feet of air, a minute, thus removing all the odor particles suspended in the air.
How can I remove the odors embedded in materials?
The odor you smell is made up of physical particles. However, they are small enough to penetrate deep into materials. There is a need to reach such particles and neutralize them to remove all traces of odors. The product or method used when deodorizing the area should easily penetrate the materials. Our SERVPRO technicians rely on:

Here in New York, Oyster Bayresidents have become familiar with devastating winter and summer storms that can damage roofs and siding on homes and businesses. Our SERVPRO of Oyster Bay team of water restoration professionals can choose the most efficient paths to thoroughly dry damaged areas, materials, and contents within the property. At first glance, you may not be concerned with your tile or wood flooring after a major overflow from the dishwasher or other household appliance. However, if there are any cracks in the waterproof coating or any other vulnerabilities under an appliance, for example, the wood or subflooring may absorb moisture, causing further damage.
What if My Tile and Hardwood Flooring Sustain Damage?
Water removal in your Oyster Bay home can be challenging, mainly if the moisture is not evident. Although there may be no visible issues at first, it is critical to inspect your flooring right away for moisture using moisture detection equipment. The drying and restoration process should begin before you see any buckling to increase the chances of saving the floor. As time goes on, nails begin pulling, and the floor warps, becoming more difficult to dry and return to preloss conditions.
What are the Benefits of Using a Floor Mat Drying System?
Are there other options?
In Upstate NY, many homes have basements, so drying your subfloors from beneath the living area may be a less disruptive option than using floor mats or pulling up flooring.
SERVPRO technicians aim to repair and restore damage rather than ripping up and replacing expensive hardwood or ceramic tiling floors. Throughout the drying process, technicians measure moisture levels to make sure your flooring is neither over dried or under dried and returned to previous levels. We make it, "Like it never even happened."

Furnace puff backs, as well as open fires, can spit ash into your Oyster Bay home. These damages can affect carpets, particularly severely, because carpet fibers are naturally porous. Foot traffic over the affected area can drive ash or soot further into the carpet fibers while applying water can result in adverse damage to the laminated layers themselves or set the soot even deeper into the fibers. Carpet restoration requires a complex skillset and comprehensive knowledge of how different types of fibers, soils, or ash respond to cleaning methods. Our team can assess the level of harm and proceed with a tailored approach to restore your carpets rather than replace them, whenever possible.
There is a high risk of worsening fire damage in your Oyster Bay home by applying the wrong products or solutions to a carpet. You should check with the manufacturer to find out which solutions they recommend for carpet cleaning. Some rugs may only respond well to dry cleaning methods like vacuuming or emulsifying powders. Others may benefit from hot water extraction methods. SERVPRO technicians usually follow up a carpet cleaning solution with a rotary brush to buffer the carpet and return fibers to their preloss condition.
Or, you can call SERVPRO to dispatch a (CCT) carpet cleaning technician accredited by the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and garner your best chance of salvaging your prized carpeting.
If carpets in your home are ruined by ash, contact SERVPRO of Oyster Bay at (516) 464-3300.
